Tasting Notes

Deep intense black cherry colour with a bouquet of ripe black fruits. Full ripe red fruit flavours with good body and balance.

Wine with a very deep and intense cherry black colour. Stains the glass. Its attractive colour and shine and potent bouquet of ripe black fruits are a sign of the quality of the grapes with which the wine was made, grown on vineyards with an average age of 60 years in the heart of Rioja Alta. It has an intense nose and excellent definition, attractive and with personality, with hints of almond sponge, egg yolk, vanilla, balsamic and dark-roasted aromas, ripe red fruit and Indian ink. In the mouth it has a good attack, marked acidity, with body, excellent structure and balance and a long-lived floral finish.

Producer Information

Bodegas Santalba: Santiago Ijalba and his son Roberto own and run this Bodega in the village of Gimileo 4 kilometers from Haro, the wine capital of the Rioja region. They follow the usual Rioja practice of using their own grapes supplemented by those of several contract growers. Tempranillo is the dominant grape but they also use small quantities of other Rioja red grapes, Garnacha, Graziano, and Mazuelo. This is a modern bodega but making both traditional and modern wines at the very pinnacle of Rioja wines.
